Treasures of the Forest

In the landscape of ever increasing options by disc golf brands, there is one mini that stands above the rest, Matt Sime’s, Treasures of the Forest.

This story Begins in 2011, birthed out of a friendship between Matt and his friend Clay Tweedy, running team building and climbing events for the YMCA together for 8 years. Clay was a skilled wood turner, which soon had the gears turning in Matt’s mind for custom wood-turned minis. The years went by and Matt continued to work with Clay creating and selling minis at events, feeding his love for the sport, dinner, and a full tank of gas.

Everything changed in November 2016, when the fateful day came when Matt discovered a used lathe at an auction. Placing a bid on a whim, Matt’s luck hit and he won the lathe; quickly discovering he had won a pile of lathe parts that he didn’t know how to assemble. Working alongside Clay, they assembled the lathe which quickly transformed Matt’s artwork, reshaping the direction of Treasures of the Forest to include bowls, pizza cutters, ice cream scoops, pepper mills, and bottle stoppers.

Matt began creating his first disc golf minis in January of 2017, experimenting with different natural materials and designs. Then in October 2018 the fateful moment occurred when Matt began merging wood with resign; creating Treasures of the Forest as we know it today.

2019 was a year dedicated to perfecting the process, experimenting with natural elements, colors, and custom designs for events. By the time the pandemic hit in March of 2020 the rise in demand had reached new heights, leading Matt to dive into Treasures of the Forest full time.

Not only functional, but personal as well; Matt’s artwork has the ability to generate new conversations and connections on and off the course. The past 3 years has seen Matt’s artwork continue to develop and grow in popularity, leading a variety of touring professionals, tournaments, and fans of his artwork to begin exclusively choosing Treasures of the Forest as their mini of choice.

Disc golf minis are a small but mighty addition to your game that can help you improve your overall performance while allowing you to express yourself in new and unique ways. Most of us have never placed much attention on our minis, often picking up anything available at our local pro shop or relying on the free mini we get every year we renew our PDGA membership, but what if it could enhance the overall experience of the sport?

I encourage everyone to explore Matt’s work by visiting his website and FB page. Matt is not only a talented artist, but an tremendous ambassador for the sport as well; hosting his annually held events at the Camp Pepin Campgrounds in Wisconsin. I had the privilege of attending his Campfire event this past March (’23) and recommend it to anyone looking for good vibes, good company, and great disc golf!
